  • St Mary's Coity has been in existence for almost 700 years and is connected to Coity Castle.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Coity, is a place of spiritual, religious and architectural significance.

The church as seen today is due largely to the work undertaken in the 14th century and linked with developments and building at Coity castle. It is thought that the church, which is a fine example of a cruciform plan, a design characteristic of the medieval church, was completed in or about 1325 and dedicated on the feast day of St. Mary.

Over its extensive history, it has not only witnessed but also engaged in the many national changes in religion, society and politics. Yet the constant element that has remained the same has been its witness to the Christian faith.

The church contains evidence of Catholic traditions from pre-Reformation times as well as early 14th century effigies of members of the Norman de Turberville family who were responsible for the building of Coity castle. There are also fine examples of stained glass windows such as an early fourteenth century style window as well as a Morris & Co., window designed by Marshall and Webb in 1861.

Today, just as then, this place and its people bear witness to the Person of Jesus Christ and the sharing of his teachings, historical and contemporary, with those ready to listen and hear.
