Bridgend Deanery FC

Bridgend Deanery Football Club is an 11-aside team playing in the United Christian League.

Players range in age from 17 to 39 and we are the only Church in Wales side in the league. Our players come, not just from Bridgend, but from across the surrounding area. We play in a league of 14 church football clubs from Swansea, Cardiff, RCT and places in between.

Today players regularly comment that the encouraging atmosphere and the emotional support they receive in our club is a significant difference to other teams they have played for.

In 2010 both my sons and two of my nephews were already playing for the football team and I would regularly attend training sessions and matches. At the time there was much publicity around the prevalence of young men’s suicide in Bridgend and I thought the football team could be used as a vehicle to provide a supportive environment and a friendship group for young men, which would encourage good mental well-being. In 2011, when the original manager left, I took over as manager with this ethos in mind
